Partitioning Austria-Hungary

Description

This is my favourite way to partition Austria-Hungary in a more Germany-friendly post-WW1 context. Germany hasn't lost so badly, and maybe the war ended in an equal truce, but either way, Austria-Hungary just couldn't handle the strain and Germany needed to stabilize the area.

The grey areas (Austria and Bohemia (along with Luxembourg and Liechtenstein)) go to Germany, the brown (Galicia) to Poland (luckily for the Poles, the Germans scrapped the outrageous border strip annexation plan, and somehow the Poles managed the wrest the area of East Galicia from the beleaguered Ukrainians, although Russia is even more of a mess in this timeline), and gold (Bukovina) to Romania (which also got Bessarabia).

Hungary gains independence at the expense of losing the newly-created Burgenland (shhh butterflies), a German-majority strip of territory annexed by the Reich. In compensation, Croatia, Dalmatia, and Bosnia are combined into a greater Kingdom of Croatia in personal union with Hungary. Due to the former's historical significance, Hungary also gets to keep the mixed-ethnicity Pressburg whilst losing German-majority Ödenburg to Germany. Hungary probably retains the Habsburg dynasty since they've lost their home territory of Austria.

It's far from a perfect scenario, nor is it particularly realistic, but I like it. I found the original basemap on Wikipedia somewhere, I just coloured it in and added the red border.

I wouldn't separate Croatia and Hungary, but who cares
