Restored Byzantine Empire

Description

This is a map of a post-WW1 alternate history scenario in which Greece defeated Turkey and the Soviet Union never managed to annex the southern Caucasus countries. Greece and Armenia have united in a personal union due to their shared culture and to isolate Turkey. The name Byzantium was chosen in order to avoid aggravating the hostile Italians and to stress the eastern nature of the new state. Constantine I of Greece was crowned with great ceremony as Emperor Constantine XII in Constantinople, the restored capital of the empire. Regional allies include Romania, Yugoslavia, Georgia, Kurdistan, Persia, and via their Middle East mandates, Britain and France.

Important historical cities regained by the Byzantine Empire include Constantinople, Adrianople, Nicaea, Smyrna, and Trebizond. The Greeks wrested the Dodecanese from Italy, annexed Northern Epirus from Albania and Western Thrace from Bulgaria, and received Cyprus from the British. The Byzantine Empire, in partnership with Yugoslavia and Romania, is the dominant power in the Balkans and in partnership with Georgia and Persia, the dominant power in the south Caucasus region. It also keeps Turkey down with the assistance of the Kurds, the Arabs, and the occupying British and French authorities.

Relations with Bulgaria are cool but improving, and Albania is being held together to protect against Italian interests in the region. Relations with Turkey are obviously quite terrible and large Turkish minority in the Greek half of the country is not being treated very well. Despite the Armenian genocide, the far smaller population of Turks is being treated far better. Azerbaijan, a secular Muslim state, is quite unhappy with Georgian and Armenian acquisitions of territory, but is surrounded on all sides by hostile powers. Greece and Turkey are both vying for control of Antioch, which is currently under French administration. The Soviets are horrified, but are in a weaker position, with the Russian Civil War still ongoing. Ukraine is practically independent, controlling a large swathe of territory in the Kuban region, and pursuing a good relationship with the Byzantines and other neighbours.

Blue: the Kingdom of Greece before the First World War.
Purple: Greek territorial gains after the Byzantine Restoration War.
Gold: the Armenian part of the new Byzantine Empire.
Red: the truncated Turkish Republic, replacing the old Ottoman Empire.
